Rep. Jacobs Speaks at IL Mining Institute Annual Meeting in Marion

Rep. Patrick Windhorst, Rep. Paul Jacobs, and Senator Terri Bryant answer questions during the Legislative Roundtable at the IMI Annual Meeting in Marion on July 22, 2025.

State Rep. Paul Jacobs accepted an invitation to speak to the Illinois Mining Institute (IMI) at their annual meeting held in Marion, Illinois this year. He also participated in a legislative roundtable discussion about his legislation to repeal CEJA and help grow the mining industry in southern Illinois.

“When people think of mining, I think most people only envision coal miners or oil rig workers, but the reality is that rocks and minerals such as limestone, clay, and silica come from mining right under our feet here in Illinois,” commented Jacobs. “In a typical home mining provides the bricks, cement for concrete, glass windows, vinyl siding, and the electricity to power a home. Illinois minerals help make common products such as medicines, vitamins, toothpaste, gym shoes, soap, nylon clothing, and kitty litter.”

At the IMI Annual meeting, Rep. Jacobs talked about his legislation, co-sponsored with Rep. Patrick Windhorst and Rep. Dave Severin, to repeal Illinois’ failed “Green New Deal.” Chief Co-Sponsor on HB 4087 and HB 4088, Jacobs has introduced two pieces of legislation that would repeal Illinois’ Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA) and study how to bring power plants back online to improve electricity affordability and reliability. The plan is labeled as “Energize Illinois.”

The Illinois Mining Institute is dedicated to the advancement of the mining industry in Illinois through the promotion, study, and investigation of mining issues and problems; through support of education and proper training in practical and scientific mining; and through the transfer and dissemination of accurate information about mining for the benefit of its members, the mining industry and society.
